THE CHATHAM EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE CENTER

Conceptualized by the Chicago Cook Workforce Development Partnership in the City of Chicago and Cook County, this facility truly lives up to its name as a place for education and occupational advancement. With classroom, group meeting spaces, and a state-of the art manufacturing classroom (known as the "Maker Lab"), teachers and professionals from Jane Addams Resource Corporation (JARC) and Richard J. Daley College provide instruction. This building is dedicated in memory of Dr. Betty Howard, who was killed in an egregious shooting in the area. It was a seven-year effort to get a project to know the grief of the community.

The 11,000-square-foot Center, conceptualized by the Chicago Cook Workforce Development Partnership—which operates the public workforce system in Chicago and Cook County—serves as a hub for education and occupational advancement. The first floor houses offices, classroom and meeting spaces, and a state-of-the-art manufacturing classroom/Maker Lab, where the Jane Addams Resource Corporation (JARC) and Richard J. Daley College (part of the City Colleges of Chicago) provide instruction. Courses include blueprint reading, electrical circuitry, Computer-Aided Design (CAD), and metrology (the science of measurement)—key skills in advanced manufacturing. On the second floor, a career center offers services for job seekers and businesses, such as resume preparation, job training, screening, and placement. The floor also features a computer lab, a resource room, and a large, sunlit multi-purpose space that can accommodate over 100 people for hiring events or community gatherings. This room can be subdivided into classrooms as needed.

The Greater Chatham Initiative (GCI), which launched in June 2016, is also based at the Center. As a local anchor institution, GCI coordinates planning and fundraising for synergistic initiatives that drive comprehensive neighborhood and economic growth. All services at the Center are free of charge, and the facility offers weekend hours to support community use. The building is dedicated in memory of Dr. Betty Howard, who was tragically killed in a shooting in the area. The project represents a seven-year effort to honor the community's grief.
